Gregg Shannon Interview

Gregg Shannon
1. Gregg thanks for taking time out to talk to us. Tell us, what aims do you have for your new club Crusaders this season 2007/08?
My aims for this season with Crusaders are to firstly establish myself as the number one keeper at the club and to maintain a high level of consistency in my performance. Obviously then is to challenge for as much silverware as possible.
2. How do you prepare for a game?
I am one of those players who has a routine. If I do something one week and I do well I try and do the same the next week. But normally I do the same warm up and then put my kit on with my jersey always on last.
3. In your view who is the best player in the Irish League?
The best player in the Irish League in my opinion is Paul McAreavey. Having played with him at Linfield, his passing, skill and vision is unbelievable. That is outfield, if it were Goalkeeper, it has to be my big mate Alan Mannus. I think we all know how good the big man is.
4. In your view, who's currently the best footballer in the world?
The best in the world would be Kaka of AC Milan.

5. What is the most attractive aspect of playing football for you?
Most attractive aspect is being lucky enough to get paid for playing a game that I love.

6. What do you do away from football to relax?
Away from football I love playing Golf to relax. But at the minute the way I'm playing I need football to get away from Golf to relax!
7. Are you superstitious?
I would be superstitious. As I said before I like to have the same warm up routine, and I would tend to put my kit on the same way.
8. What do you think about the high salaries of modern players?
High salaries of the modern players I think are justified in some cases. But I think that they can become greedy and the bigger clubs will always be winning when they can afford to throw huge salaries at the world's top players. In my opinion it is now hard to find loyal players to any clubs because they follow the larger salaries.
9. Which car do you drive?
I drive a Mitsubishi L200 Animal Pick up jeep.
10. What football clubs have you played for in your career?
I have played for Sunderland, Brighton, Halifax, Scarborough, Portadown, Dungannon Swifts, Ballymena and Linfield. Just a couple!
11. What were the best and worst moments in your football career?
Best moment, playing for Northern Ireland schoolboys for my first international game against Wales at Wrexham in 1996 which my Mum and Dad travelled over to see. Worst, having to leave Sunderland after being there for 3 years.
12. Do you like surfing on the internet?
Yeah I do enjoy surfing the net. You are able to find out loads of info on everything in the world. Buy clothes, book holidays etc.
13. If you had it all to do again Is there anything you would change about your football career?
I'm not sure I would because I believe everything happens for a reason. You shouldn't live with any regrets. Make a decision and right or wrong you have to deal with it.
14. Are you married?
No not married yet but my fiance Sian and I are planning to get married in the next couple of years!! All my friends will give me stick for this. Especially Stuart King.
15. Do you have children?
No children yet (that I know !)
16. What advice would you give to somebody who wants to become a goalkeeper?
The best advice I can give is to go to coaching courses when you are young. Believe me that these sessions will stand you in good stead for the future. They will work on your shape, technique and your goalkeeping fundamentals. This will give you the best start which then your talent will shine through.
17. What do you think about the standard of football in Northern Ireland?
Football in Northern Ireland has improved in my opinion. We now get players from England, Republic of Ireland and even far abroad. The standard is improving. Evidence of this is how good Linfield has done in the Setanta Cup over the years against the full time clubs from the Republic.
18. What do you think about having an all Ireland League seeing you have played in the Setanta Cup for Linfield against the best teams from the South?
I think if we were to have an all Ireland league then the clubs would need to progress to full time status. There would be a lot of travelling involved so I think it would be too much to ask players to work full time jobs then to have to travel to away games which may see them not getting home until really late.
19. What is your favourite holiday destination?
Favourite holiday destination is Cyprus. I have been there four times before and I'm going this year for my friend Andrew Hunters wedding.
20. Are you a good loser?
I'm a really bad loser. If I lose I come home in a real grump and don't want to talk to anybody. My fiance would then say it's only football, but she doesn't understand!
21. What goalkeeping gloves and football boots do you wear?
At the minute I have been wearing Reusch duo tech gloves. I wore them all season and really liked them. They are the ones with the latex in the inside. I am going to be wearing Umbro next season. Hopefully getting sponsored to wear them. I also wear Umbro Speciali boots.
22. What do you think before a penalty?
Before a penalty I am watching the player's body language. To see if he is leaning to a particular side or looking at a side. I try and make this judgment early then decide were I'm going and not change my mind.
23. Have you got a nickname? If so why do they call you that?
Yes I have quite a few. I mostly get called Shanno, because of my last name. But Alan Mannus calls me Harry, out of Harry and the Hendrsons. It's about a Big Foot which has hair all over and I have a hairy back!!!
24. Who is the worst dressed player that you have ever played with?
Worst dressed. There is a few I could say. But the worst/most outrageous has to be Stuart King. He wears the tightest jeans that I have ever seen in my life. I mean you can see everything. I don't know how he gets into them never mind out of them!
25. Which player of your team has the strongest shot?
The player with the hardest shot is Andy Hunter. That is why we call him "Whoosh" but the odd time he doesn't connect right and the ball goes all over the place. But when he does, that's hard.
26. What music do you like and what was the last CD you bought?
I like all music, but if I'm honest, I prefer 80's music. The last CD I bought was a Ministry Of Sound classics CD.
27. Who is your favourite actor/actress?
Favourite Actor is Will Ferrell, and Actress is Cameron Diaz.
28. At Linfield who would have been in charge of the team CD player?
At Linfield Michael Gault is in charge of the music. He has some great tunes but only really the taste of the younger generation in the dressing room. The older guys like Pat McShane and the Skipper don't really dance along. Pat McShane says it's just the same words over and over. "Not a patch on ABBA" he says.
Gregg thanks for answering the questions and good luck at your new club for the new season 2007/08
